Yet I know that my words will fall on deaf ears and not make a dent in its decision to stream this serial. I would have hoped and expected a company like Netflix to be more responsible in choosing its programming and, minimally, to do some fact checking. We choose to live within these boundaries because we see them as G-d given and we know that they work to the benefit of the individual, the family, and the community. Certainly, the nature of religion is that it is restrictive, providing boundaries similar to boundaries contained in every legal system, without which lawlessness would prevail. Reason being that they see beauty and wisdom in their age-old religion, a religion that has withstood the test of time. So, as in the wider world, while not every marriage is a success, the “norm” is that women are respected, admired, supported and, yes, loved by their husbands. Women in Monsey are not shackled nor are they living in the 1800s. They choose to be religious, they choose to dress modestly, and they choose to have large families. Monsey is home to thousands of women who are thriving religiously, professionally and personally. We are wise, we are proud and opportunities abound. We come in all different flavors. While some of us have chosen to be stay-at-home wives and mothers, many of us have pursued careers as CEOs, doctors, lawyers, nurses, authors, artists, business owners, computer techs, professors, therapists, accountants - and pretty much anything else out there. My narrative is not quite as dramatic as Talia’s, but I myself am a CEO and owner of a successful company, a very proud wife, mother, and grandmother, a philanthropist and an activist in the Orthodox community. I’ve run a 5-mile race while raising money for a local charity (with countless hours of training) and have advocated for various causes both in Albany and Washington.
